History of FEAT

What is F.E.A.T. of B.C.?

F.E.A.T of B.C. is a non-profit, volunteer organization of parents and concerned professionals working for universal access to effective autism treatment for all children diagnosed with autism and other pervasive developmental disorders.

F.E.A.T. of B.C. accepts no money from the government. All financial contributions to F.E.A.T. of B.C. go toward the work of making effective autism treatment available to everyone regardless of ability to pay.

The  Executive Director and Founder of F.E.A.T. of B.C., S.K. Freeman, Ph.D., is a parent of a child with autism. Dr. Freeman holds a degree in sociology from Stanford University and is publisher. Dr. Freeman is also the case manager for her daughter's autism treatment program - an intensive behavioral reatment based on the advancements achieved through the work of Dr. Ivar Lovaas. Lovaas-type behavioral therapy has worked so well that Dr. Freeman established F.E.A.T. of B.C. to help other children benefit from the leading edge methods used so effectively with her child.   F.E.A.T. of B.C was established for another important reason - to publicize discrimination in B.C. against children with autism. Specifically, it is wrong that children with physical disabilities have access to government health insurance coverage, yet children with the mental, neurological disability of autism do not receive treatment. Social services that do exist for autistic children are not universally available - they are provided in an inconsistent manner with bureaucratic discretion leaving most newly diagnosed children with no government support for effective treatment. F.E.A.T. of B.C. is the unifying force for parents to work together to change an unjust health care system. Choosing to fight for an autistic child's future must not result in personal financial ruin or family breakup.

Families must not fight alone.  Since the establishment of FEAT of BC in 1996, there are over 100 parents in B.C. running therapy teams and providing Lovaas Intensive Behavioral Treatment to their children under the supervision of highly trained professionals.    FEAT of BC regularly runs a variety of workshops for parents, paraprofessionals and professionals, has a monthly parent group meeting and has an elaborate network of volunteer parents ready to help the new parent set up a treatment program for their child.
